How to Change Water Filters Under the Sink

It is important to replace your under-the-sink water filters on a regular schedule. You should follow the manufacturer’s suggested frequency to be sure you are drinking the highest quality water. In this article, we will show you how to change the water filter on a 5-stage reverse osmosis system. Keep in mind that the process may vary slightly with different models. The unit featured in this video is a Watts standard system.

How to Change Water Filters Under the Sink

Supplies

• Bucket
• Towel
• Water filter wrench
• Dish soap
• Pliers
• Drain hose
• TDS meter

Change the pre-filters

1. Turn off the water source and tank valves.
2. Activate the faucet lever to relieve pressure from the system.
3. Loosen the housings using a filter wrench.
4. Remove the old filters.
5. Clean the housings with dish soap and rinse well.
6. Place new filters in the housings.
7. Reconnect the housings – twist until snug, do not over tighten.

Flush the system

1. Replace the water out line with a drain hose.
2. Place the other end of the drain hose in a bucket.
3. Replace the water source line and turn on the valve.
4. Allow water to flow through the system for about one minute.

Replace the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane

1. Turn off the water valve.
2. Disconnect the tubing. 
3. Disconnect and replace the membrane.
4. Replace the housing cap.
5. Reconnect the tubing.

Replace the Polishing Filter

1. Disconnect the tubing. 
2. Replace the filter with the flow arrow pointed toward the outlet side of your unit.

Flush the System

1. Connect the water source to the outlet end of the polishing filter.
2. Connect the drain hose to the opposite end.
3. Turn on the water valve.
4. Flush until your TDS meter reads <10.

Reconnect the System

1. Turn off the water valve.
2. Disconnect the water source and drain hose from the polishing filter.
3. Reconnect the polishing filter tubing.
4. Replace the water line. 
5. Turn on the water and tank valves.
6. Check for leaks.
