Although I am far from an athlete, exercise is an essential part of my day. Whether it be a brisk walk, bike ride or yoga, it leaves me rejuvenated and feeling healthy. I have no trouble maintaining a commitment to some calorie burning endeavor, except when it is sweltering hot. One morning this week, I left for a walk feeling spry and ready to take on a few quick miles. A couple steps in and I already knew I was in trouble. It was nearly 90 degrees by 11 am, and my path granted me zero shade. In a word, it was miserable.
Miserable is no way to spend an hour of sunny summer weather. As Clevelanders, they are hard to come by, we have to make the best of every single one.
After a refreshing shower and guzzling what seemed like a gallon of cold water, I began to research alternatives. I came up with a perfect solution, water. And I do not mean for drinking.
Working out in water allows for an enjoyable calorie burn despite the summer heat. No longer will I return from my workout dripping in sweat, I will now return kissed by the summer sun, cooled by fresh water, and I will burn even more calories than my usual routine!
I came up with 11 ways to make water part of your summer workout:
The best part about these water workouts is they are fun! These are things I want to be doing in the summer anyway. In the past kayaking and swimming happened when there was time, which is basically never.
Now by incorporating these activities into my official exercise routine, I am killing two birds with one stone; getting fit and enjoying some summer fun, all while staying cooled by our BFF…water.
It is important to remember, however, even though snorkeling and water skiing leave you cool and refreshed, hydration is still pivotal. Remember to drink plenty of water before, after, and during all physical activity, especially in hot weather. Here are some summer hydration tips you should also keep in mind!
